‘Ignore it,’ said Thomas. ‘They did start a Revolutionary Youth Movement when Siaka Stevens was friendly with the Russians, but nobody liked it, and this is the only camp now. It is not important.’

How different from other countries I have been in. Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania all have big, strong youth movements based on the Hitler Youth – based on it, not just having some superficial similarities. Massive indoctrination, combined with military training and a bit of vocational training. Most important, they are a powerful and instantly mobilized force for crushing political dissent.

This raises the question, ‘How do the politicians here in Sierra Leone keep control in without this muscle?’
